Last fall my husband and I had the opportunity to go on a Mediterranean cruise without our kids! I know! Amazing, right?!

It was such a fortunate opportunity, and we managed to find childcare with people we trusted, so we went for it.

We started in Venice, and stopped in Croatia, Montenegro, Malta, Sicily, Naples, and ended in Rome.

While we were on the ship, I encouraged my husband to ditch his diet co*ke addiction, and instead opt for coffee. I’d been on his case about diet co*ke for years.

He’s never been a big fan of coffee, while I could drink it all day everyday!

Our ship had two cute coffee shops where they served the most amazing frothy latte recipes throughout the day.

My husband and I made it a routine to stop in around 2pm and grab a mid-day pick me up. He began asking for an almond milk latte, while I got my regular oat milk latte.

To my surprise, he began loving them! When we got home he stopped drinking diet co*ke all together, and started drinking coffee to get his caffeine fix in the morning.

One mile down the road from our neighborhood was a Starbucks, so soon after we came back from our trip he began visiting Starbucks regularly to order his favorite latte.

That was all well and good, but Starbucks lattes can start adding up when you get them everyday!

That’s when I decided to perfect an almond milk latte recipe at home. We needed to cut back on our Starbucks spending, but I also didn’t want my husband going back to his soda drinking days!

As a result, I’ve played around with making this recipe more times than I can count, and have all the tips and tricks for making a perfectly creamy, frothy latte using almond milk.

Not only that, but I’ll show you how to make it both hot and iced since the summer months are fast approaching! Plus I’ve included a few different flavors to try!

Strong Coffee or Espresso: I recommend using a French press to achieve a strong coffee shop like flavor for this latte. If you have an espresso machine, feel free to make your own espresso. Otherwise, use your drip coffee maker to create a strong pot of coffee.

Unsweetened Almond Milk: Use an unsweetened almond milk so that you have control over the sweetness of your coffee. If you decide to use a sweetened or vanilla flavored almond milk, I don’t recommend adding any additional sweetener or vanilla extract. Some companies make a barista blend of almond milk. If you can find it use it! This will help you achieve the best foam and texture.

Maple Syrup: This ingredient is optional. You only need to add maple syrup if you want your latte with a touch more sweetness.

Vanilla Extract: Also optional, but add a nice vanilla flavor for an vanilla latte. See below for my other flavor suggestions!

While the above coffee tools are nice to have, and maybe, if you’re a coffee aficionado you may want to start building your at home coffee equipment, all you really need to make this recipe is your favorite coffee maker, and a blender.

How to Make an Almond Milk Latte – Step by Step

Hot Version:

Step 1: Prepare your coffee using your favorite coffee beans. I recommend using a dark roast blend, or espresso blend. You may choose to use whatever coffee maker you have at home whether that is an espresso machine, drip coffee maker, French Press, Keurig, or Nespresso.

Step 2: Heat 1 cup of almond milk over the stovetop on low-medium heat. Whisk in maple syrup and vanilla extract if using. Heat until the milk begins to steam and thicken.

Step 3: Remove from heat. Pour milk into your blender. Secure the lid, and blend until the milk is foamy on the top.

Note: You can use any type of blender, or a frothing wand if you have one.

Step 4: Pour the coffee into your mug.

Note: If using espresso, use 1-2 shots depending on how strong you like your latte. If using regular coffee, fill your cup halfway full, or ¾ of the full (for a stronger cup).

Step 5: Pour the almond milk over top of the coffee, using a spoon, skim the froth off the top, and spoon onto the top of your latte. Enjoy!

Iced Coffee Directions:

Step 1: Prepare your coffee using your favorite coffee beans and using the coffee maker you have at home. Allow the coffee to cool and come to room temperature.

Step 2: In a small bowl, whisk together the almond milk with the maple syrup and vanilla extract.

Step 3: Fill a tall glass with ice all the way up to the top.

Note: If you like really strong coffee, make ice cubes using coffee. This way you won’t get a watered down coffee drink as the ice melts!

Step 4: Pour room temperature coffee ¾ of the way to the top. Then pour the almond milk all the way to the top. Stir with a tall spoon to fully combine the milk and coffee.

Expert Tips

  • Use a strong coffee or espresso.
  • Don’t burn the coffee
  • Steam the milk in a pot, then froth it in the blender.

Flavor Variations

Follow the same directions above only whisk the added flavoring ingredients into the almond milk as directed in step 2 for both the hot or iced latte version. The ingredient amounts below are for one serving.

Mocha:

  • 1-2 shots of espresso or ½ cup of brewed coffee
  • 1 cup steamed almond milk
  • 1 teaspoon maple syrup
  • ¼ teaspoon vanilla
  • 1 tablespoon cacao powder

Pumpkin Spice:

  • 1-2 shots of espresso or ½ cup of brewed coffee
  • 1 cup almond milk
  • 1 teaspoon of pumpkin spice
  • 1 teaspoon maple syrup
  • ¼ teaspoon of vanilla extract

Caramel:

  • 1-2 shots of espresso or ½ cup of brewed coffee
  • 1 cup almond milk
  • 1 tablespoon vegan caramel sauce

What is the best almond milk for lattes?

The best almond milk for lattes is the barista blends. There are many different brands out there including Califa, Pacific, Almond Breeze, and Silk. These blends are specifically made to include in coffee. The main difference between these blends and regular almond milk is that they are thicker and have added thickening agents and stabilizers such as locust bean gum, sodium alginate, guar gum.

How many calories are in an almond milk latte?

Depending on the type of latte you are making and whether you are adding sweetener to it or not the calories will vary. An average cup of unsweetened original almond milk has 30 calories. A cup of coffee has 0-5 calories. Without any added sweeteners or ingredients it has 35 calories.

If you add 1 teaspoon of maple syrup you add an additional 17 calories.

How do you froth your latte without a steamer?

If you don’t have a steamer no problem! Warm your milk in a saucepan over the stove until it begins to steam but not boil.

Pour the milk into your blender, and whip it for about 30 seconds. It will become super frothy!

Can I use a different plant milk for this recipe?

Yes! Feel free to use soy milk, coconut milk, or any non-dairy milk to create this dairy-free latte.

This is a difficult question to answer. It really depends on the type of plant milk you like the best. Some say oat milk is the best for coffee drinks, while others think soy milk is best for coffee recipes. I say use the type of milk you enjoy the most.

Hot or Iced

  • 1 cup brewed coffee or 2-4 shots of espresso
  • 2 cups unsweetened almond milk
  • 2 teaspoon maple syrup optional
  • ½ teaspoon vanilla extract optional

Mocha Flavor

  • 1 tablespoon cacaco powder whisk together with milk in step 2

Pumpkin Spice Flavor

  • 1 teaspoon pumpkin spice whisk together with milk in step 2

Caramel Flavor

  • 1 tablespoon vegan caramel sauce whisk together with milk in step 2

Instructions

Hot Latte

  • Prepare your coffee using your favorite coffee beans, and coffee maker.
